Papery Wild Hops is an erect shrub, about 1 m tall.
Branchlets are slender, densely brown hairy. Leaves are simple;
stipules narrowly ovate, about 2 mm, falling off; leaf-stalk about 1.5
cm, densely deciduous brown hairy. Leaf blade is round-heart-shaped,
4-4.5 cm, papery or thinly leathery, lower surface with dense, orange,
stalkless glands, basal veins 3, lateral veins 3 pairs, base slightly
heart-shaped, tip tapering. Flowers are borne in leaf-axils or at
branch-ends, in thyrses. Inflorescence axis is 3-7 cm long, densely
brown hairy; cymules each enclosed by concave bract; bracts 1.5-2 x
1.8-3.8 cm, membranous, hairless, with obvious veins, persistent, tip
notched. Flowers are 6-9 mm; flower-stalk 0.4-1.6 cm, densely hairy.
Sepal-cup 5-lobed, 4-5 mm, densely velvet-hairy, with orange glands;
sepals lanceshaped, almost equal to tube. Standard has lobe as long as
broad, contracted above ears, and obovate or inverted heart-shaped;
wings oblong; keel slightly curved. The fresh flowers are chewed by
children. Seed-pod is elliptic, 10-15 x 6-10 mm, densely brown
hairy.Papery Wild Hops is found in Indian Subcontinent (including the
Himalaya) to China and Indo-China, at altitudes of 300-1000 m.
Flowering: December-March.
Medicinal uses: The plant is used in the
treatment of epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia and to relieve pain. The
roots are used in the treatment of epilepsy, insomnia, acidity and
stomach disorders. The pounded or powdered root is taken internally in
the treatment of filariasis. One to two drops of juice extracted from
the pressed seeds is put in the eyes as a remedy in eye troubles and
also to remove cataract.
